The Navajo Origin Legend
I think that this short story was very dull. The Navajo Origin Legend describes a ritual preformed by the gods and then Mirage people. The rituals they did were to create life. The white ear of corn was changed into a man and the yellow ear of corn was changed into a women. The wind gave them life, this means that the oxegen we breathe made them live. It explains when the wind ceases to blow, we die, this is true because without air we cannot survive. The gods created the man and the women and told them they must be husband and wife, and live together, and that is how this story of how the world was created started. This story was kind of confusing at first, it was short but alot of stuff at once. I didnt enjoy reading it.
The earth on Turtles back
This story is about how the earth began. The story begins with telling us about the skylands and how there is a chief, whoes in charge of all the skylands. The cheifs wife had a dream, this dream was about how there was a tree to be uprooted for great power was on there way after this. So the cheif ordered young men to uproot the tree. It took great strenghth because the roots of the tree were soo deep. When they finally managed to get the tree out of the ground, a huge whole in the ground appeared. The chiefs wife was ordered not to go near the hole, but she did not listen. Because of her not listening she fell straight down into the hole, down, down, down. When she thought she was falling to her death, two swans came swooping over and saved her. This world through the whole was all water, no land. The animals realized that she couldnt live in the water so they all tried there hardest to go to the bottom of the water and get some land. None of them sucedded, until the littlest one of them all, the tiny muskrat accomplished in getting a little soil from the bottom of the water. The soil was put on a turtles back and from there life had begun and things started to grow.

When grizzlies walked upright
This story is similiar to The Earth on Turtles back, they are both stories of how the earth was created. In this story there is a land of sky spirits with a cheif. In this land it grew extremely cold and snowy, so the cheif carved a hole into the ground. As time grew on, the snow created a mound that was from the earth to the tip of the sky. The cheif walked down the moutain, and started to touch everything he saw, this created trees and life. Everything he touched turned into something new. He created with his stick, grizzly bears. When they were first created they walked upright on two feet and they could talk like humans. But they looked so fierce that the sky spirits sent them away from him to live in the forest at the base of the mountain of snow. The chiefs daughter was ordered to talk to the wind spirit to tell him to blow gently, but she didnt listen to her father when he said dont stick your head out at the top of the mountain, so she did. She got blown away and a grizzy bear found her, they lived together the human and the bears. One day they got married and had several children, then the grizzly bears went in a herd to ask the father for forgivness for keeping there daughter from him all these years. The father was very glad but he was furious at the bears, so the father put a curse on the bears, and made the bears walk on all fours and made them so they couldnt talk. After that he took his daughter back to the sky spirits and lived on. The grizzly children turned into indians and that was how the world was made.

pg. 15 American Literature Textbook, Christopher Columbus
The Journal of the first voyge to America, was about Christopher Columbus arriving to a new land. He arrived at the Cape of the Island on Sunday, October 21st, 1492. He descibes this new place to him in much detail. Columbus mentioned how the land sourrounding him was cleared, as soon as his ships landed, all of the people flead to escape with there valuables and goods. Reading just that made me realize different tribes and people, must have had invasions, were all of there goods were stolen and valubles were taken from them. Chrisopher Columbus describes these lands beautifully, in my head i can imagine all the detialed descriptions he says in this story. He describes what it smells like, what it looks like, all the trees, animals, and how it looked deserted. He mentions how some of the natives went up to him and his people and Christopher gave them hawk bells and glass beads. In return for what they gave them, the natives gave them water. Columbus then traveled around the island in search for the king, in order to see if he could gather any gold. After that , he planned to sail to a very large island called Cipango. Traveling to these islands, he was searching to find spices and gold.
